Elvira Galindo Vera was born in Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico on February 9, 1920, during the first phase of the Mexican Revolution. She passed away on July 21, 2014 in Aurora, IL, surrounded by her family at home.
All throughout her life Elvira upheld her Christian ideals and practiced a charitable, compassionate, and loving demeanor to all she encountered until the Lord called her home.
In 1942, she reestablished a relationship with a childhood neighbor, Jesse Vera Jimenez, who then married her in 1944 before leaving for the South Pacific in World War II. Elvira emigrated to the United States in early 1945 to Aurora, IL. After her husband’s return from the war, the two raised their family of six in Aurora. Upon her widowing in 1967 she single-handedly raised her children and worked until her retirement.
An extremely loving individual, Elvira was known for her hospitality and strived to serve and care for others. She was always reading the Bible, enjoyed cooking, crocheting, gardening and being with her grandchildren.
One of the many proud moments of her life was the fulfillment of her dream of becoming a United States citizen. She achieved this goal in the company of her children being naturalized July 27, 2007, in Chicago, IL at the age of 87.
Elvira’s entry to heaven was preceded by her husband Jesse Vera Jimenez, mother, Petra Galindo, daughter Mercedes Vera, and grandsons Josue A. Lopez and Jesus Roberto Lopez.
She leaves behind son Jesse F. Vera (Elma C. Vera), daughters Martha Elena Vera Zamudio, Rosalinda Vera Lopez (Juan M. Lopez), Carmen Alicia Vera Shababy, and Mary Yolanda Vera. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Sara Lucio, Alejandra Vera, Juliana Vera, Jesse David Vera, Carlos Zamudio, Aristos Lopez, Navy LT Ian Lopez, Brian Lopez, Navy LTJG Nathaniel Lopez, Jessica Shababy-Pistorius, Lea Shababy, and Army 1stLT Dominic Shababy. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren Isabella, Sophia, Alexander, Viviana, Liliana, and Roman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family members and friends, who will always remember her fondly.
Family will receive guests on Friday, July 25th from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave. Montgomery, IL 60538. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Aurora, IL.
