Tribute

Mary Margaret (DeKing) Brummel, age 78, of Yorkville, IL passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, April 1, 2024, surrounded by family. She was born on June 22, 1945 in Aurora, IL the daughter of Herbert J. and Margaret (Goodendorf) DeKing.

Mary was a 1963 graduate of Madonna Catholic High School. She was united in marriage to Kenneth J. Brummel, Sr. on September 3, 1966, and spent the next 57 years together. Through the years she had a variety of careers ranging from Avon Lady to cake decorator for McCaslin’s Bakery to Lunch Lady at Circle Center to lastly as an insurance specialist at Brenart Eye Clinic for 28 years.

A perpetual hand-raiser, Mary was always volunteering and set a fantastic role model for her children as a Room Mom, Brownie Leader, Den Leader, CCD Teacher, Eucharistic Minister and Sports Booster. She never met a fundraiser she didn’t support whether buying or selling tickets to baking goodies - especially for the grandchildren’s activities.

Mary loved to read, sew, knit and bake. She was a “Superfan” for all her grandchildren’s various activities, and known as “Grandma” to many. She loved to talk, whether on the phone or in person, and could turn a 10 minute errand into an hour as she caught up with everyone she encountered. Her faith was very important to her, and could always be found with a prayer book, prayer cards, medals and a rosary in her purse.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth J. Brummel, Sr. of Yorkville, IL, and her four children: Missy (Brett) Burks, Ken (Natalie) Brummel, Margaret (Tim) Geltz and Kris (Amanda) Brummel; and her ten grandchildren: Jacob Burks, Cailyn Brummel, Charlotte Brummel, Lily Geltz, Mia Geltz, Ian Geltz, Morgan (Kurt) Bomba, Nick (Katelyn) Harrison, Josh (Caitlyn) Harrison, and Lindsay Harrison; and her four great grandchildren Ivy Bomba, Gus Bomba, Jackson Harrison and Brooke Harrison; and her sister, Joyce (Ron) Fichtel, of Hillpoint, WI; and her sister-in-laws, Marcia Fraser, Sharon Kline and Joy (Dan) Harker; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her twin sister, Martha Schomer; parents, Herbert J. and Margaret DeKing; her in-laws, Joseph and Lillian Brummel; and her grandson, Zachary Burks and nephew, Eric Fichtel.
