David Walter Gumz, 79, of Aurora passed away peacefully with his children, Mike and Michelle by his side on August 24, 2017 at Rush Copley Medical Center. He was born on September 29, 1937 in Aurora, IL the son of Herman and Margaret (Schilling) Gumz. Dave proudly served his country with the U.S. Army. In 1966 he joined the Aurora Police Department and for many years was the head of the traffic division. He retired in 1993 as Patrol Sergeant after 27 years of dedicated service. During his tenure with the police department he only missed 1 day of work. He was a member of the 3rd Ward Club, Tiger Club, Illinois Police Association, Fraternal Order of Police and the Aurora Police Benevolent Association. Dave was a long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Church in Aurora. In retirement Dave began working at Dieterle Memorial Home as a greeter and he thoroughly enjoyed his time there.
He is survived by his son Michael Gumz, daughter, Michelle (Chris) Gumz- Bekielewski,longtime companion Waltraut Kennedy, grandchildren, Kyle David Abell, Lindsay Rose Gumz, Olivia Grace Gumz, Meredith Nicole Gumz, Zach and Kayla Bekielewski, great- grandchildren, Levi and Scarlett Otero and Arabella Gregory. He is also survived by his 4 legged furry friend Baby. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife Rose in 1997.
Family will be receiving guests on Thursday, August 31, 2017 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway Ave .Montgomery, IL 60538. Funeral service will be on Friday, September 1, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Dieterle Memorial Home. Interment will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Montgomery, IL.
