Gary C. Engel of Aurora, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2022. Gary was born on May 24, 1941 in Sandwich, IL to Carl and Louise (Bauer) Engel. Gary attended high school in Earlville, IL and after high school worked at Strong’s Purina in Earlville. He later met Sandra Andrews and they married on February 10, 1962 in Aurora; and raised three children together. Gary started his career in manufacturing at Barber Greene where he worked until the Aurora plant closed in 1985. Gary then worked several years at Lyon Metal and Elgin Sweep before retiring to enjoy his favorite pastimes. During his life, Gary enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating, water skiing and the great outdoors. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and socializing with his many friends. Gary was a lifelong member of the Barber Greene Hunting and Fishing Club, the Aurora Moose, Amvets Post 103 in Aurora, VFW Post 7452 in Montgomery, IL and various other social clubs.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters, Marge Cook of Earlville and Dona Pike of Aurora.
Gary is survived by his brother, Wayne (Marilyn) Engel of Freeburg, IL; his former wife, Sandra Engel, Normal, IL; his children, Dawn (Tom) Wall, Bloomington, IL, Steve Engel, Somonauk, IL and Mark Engel, Somonauk, IL; his grandchildren, Rachel Wall and Tommy Wall, Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews. Gary spent many enjoyable years with his loving companion, Joyce Devore, Aurora, and his little dog, Danny.
Gary had a great sense of humor and an endearing smile. His laughter and talents as a jack of all trades will be truly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Arrangements are entrusted to Dieterle Memorial Home. There will be a celebration of Gary’s life at a later date to be announced for family and friends to gather and raise a glass to Gary’s legacy.
