On Saturday, May 16, 2020, George Popdan of Montgomery IL, passed away at the age of 98 from natural causes. Most recently he resided with family and then eventually moved to Amber Ridge Assisted Living in Moline IL. He was born in Aurora, Illinois on April 23, 1922, and was a graduate of East Aurora High School. He was retired from AT&T Technologies, Montgomery Works.
George was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, a life member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 400 of Aurora with Legion and Fellowship degrees. He was also a member of the AT&T Telephone Pioneers of America, a Life Member of the D.A.V. Hal Carr Chapter 19 of Aurora and a life Member of VFW Post 7452.
He served in the U.S. Army and was in Europe during WWII alongside his fellow Timberwolves, Cannon Co. 413th Infantry Division. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star along with other service metals.
He is survived by his three children, Cathey (Daniel) Johnson, Sherrard, IL, Nancy (Terry) Richmond, Crossville, TN and Michael (Linda) Popdan Cullman AL, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews. He enjoyed the many visits of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, always putting a smile on his face.
On July 12, 1945, he married Helen Louise Cook, mother to their three children, and she preceded him in death. He later married Matilda Jane Jensen and she preceded him in death in October 2005. Also preceding him in death were his parents Alexander and Ida Popdan, his brothers Alex, Kenneth, Mike and John Popdan.
