Joyce Behrens Serna

Joyce Behrens Serna was born December 11, 1943 in Aurora, IL and passed away June 2, 2017 at her home in Carlsbad, California as the result of heart disease.

Joyce and her sister spent their early years with their parents on a farm in the rural Oswego/Yorkville area. She helped her dad with all the chores of raising sheep. Joyce was a 4H member where she showed sheep. She graduated from Oswego High School in 1962. For many years Joyce was an excellent surgical technician at Aurora hospitals. Before she moved to California she worked at Dreyer Clinic in day surgery. In her spare time she baby sat several friends’ children. She was able to watch them grow into adults and enjoyed remembering their antics as children. She was a member of the AuSable Grove Presbyterian Church and Eastern Star. Joyce loved to travel especially going on cruises with friends and later with her husband, Pedro. At one point her car license plate was “cruz lady”.

She moved to Carlsbad, California where her sister, Judy introduced her to Pedro Serna. They married on February 17, 2001 in Carlsbad.

 Joyce is survived by her husband, Pedro Serna; her step-sons, Jose (Martha) and Pedro; step grandchildren; cousins; step nieces and nephews; Pedro’s siblings and their spouses; and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Evelyn (nee Christian) Behrens; and her sister, Judy Behrens Dunham.

A Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 10:30 AM at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 S. Broadway, Montgomery, IL. Burial will be at the AuSable Grove, Na-Au-Say Cemetery, Grove Rd., Yorkville after the funeral.
