He was born on August 6, 1925 to Johan Oscar and Selma Katherine (Dahlin) Carlson in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Wally proudly served his country as a combat infantryman in Europe during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for Electric Machinery Company in Minneapolis, then for S&C Electric Company in Chicago, retiring from the latter after 27 years. He was an avid photographer, enjoyed model trains, and especially treasured the time he spent with family and friends.
